This curvaceous coupe majors on style, value and reliability. It really looks the business even though it's not a true sports car, but it's pleasing and practical to own.

This 2+2 coupe made British buyers take notice of Hyundai. Stunning looks and creditable performance showed that the Korean carmaker had come of age. Unlike earlier Hyundais, this wasn't cheap wheels for undemanding motorists. It pleased the driver and had sleek lines that pleased the eye. It's best to view the Coupe as a practical tourer rather than an out-and-out sportster. The engines are lively if a little noisy when pushed hard. The 2.0's performance equals many hot hatchbacks and is not far short of the Alfa GTV 2.0. Porsche helped out with firm but poised suspension; the Coupe feels reactive and nimble. Grip is good and there is plenty of steering feel. Reliability, affordable insurance (the 2.0 is Group 12) and sensible fuel economy keep running costs in control. Only the rather cut-price cabin and the temptingly low prices remind you that this is actually a cheap car.
Positive Punkte
- Few cars look as good for as little money
- Enjoyable to drive
- Cheaper to own than highly-strung sportsters
|
Negative Punkte
- Well, it's only a Hyundai
- Interior is a bit cheap 'n' cheerful
- Post-2000 cars lack the purity of the original
